Dear Rt Hon Ruth Kelly MP, Young People And Transport I am writing to you in support of UKYP’s Transport Campaign “Fares Fair”. The lack of affordable and reliable transport is a major issue for young people. Without affordable, accessible public transport young people are forced to rely on friends and relatives to get to where they want to go. It also impacts upon their ability to attend their chosen place of education, find work and access leisure facilities, restricting their freedom and the choices that they can make as active citizens of the community. The issue of most concern to young people is cost. Many young people feel that they are paying too much to use public transport and that there is no consistency between ages and fares. Whilst it is acknowledged that in some areas concession cards do exist, there is no uniformity between the different regions and nations of the UK, leaving a confusing state of affairs for young people. If this Government is serious about making progress on climate change, it needs to begin by making progress on the provision of public transport. Studies have shown that by encouraging young people to use public transport from an early age, they continue to do so throughout their lives, so make public transport reliable, accessible and affordable, and help young people not only get to work, play and school but also cut down on C02 emissions. Yours sincerely
