UKYP Fares Fair Transport Summit a huge success

27.02.2009

Over 100 young people across the country came together at the UK Youth Parliament's Fares Fair transport summit to vent frustrations felt with transport providers, local and national Government. The Summit, held at Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre in London on 19th February, examined public transport shortcomings and looked at potential solutions for the future.

The day began with a controversial start - an opening speech by Bronwyn Hill, Director-General at the Department for Transport, followed by a challenging question and answer session, a seminar by campaigning experts Campaign for Better Transport and a young people question and answer session. Young people came away energised with campaign ideas and tools to fight for young people in their area.

Adam Lonsdale, MYP for East Riding of Yorkshire said:

“The day went incredibly well. It’s great to see that young people can come together to raise awareness on an issue they are all passionate for. And even better, to learn invaluable new skills which will help them campaign locally, regionally and nationally. It’s a shame that if young people are consulted at all, they are always the last, and I think the conference taught young people how to change this and take a step forward in the world of transport campaigning.”
